Temperatures are expected to drop significantly after Hurricane Earl passes along the New England coast this evening into Saturday morning with effects from the storm expecting to be minimal at the point.

But officials were urging people near the storm’s path not to become complacent, and to keep abreast of Earl’s progress should take a course that would bring it closer to the New England mainland.

‘This is the strongest hurricane to threaten the northeast and New England since Hurricane Bob in 1991,» said Dennis Feltgen, a meteorologist and spokesman for the National Hurricane Center told The Associated Press. «They don’t get storms this powerful very often.»

Forecasters said Earl could pass within 30 miles of Nantucket Island, Mass., bringing wind gusts up to 100 mph.

Local meteorologist Russ Hobby expects the storm to stay offshore as it approaches the New Hampshire coast, but the exact path of the storm is still uncertain.

«The cold front coming in could move the hurricane out to sea further,» said Hobby. «We’ll have to watch the whole picture to see what will happen.»

Hobby said if Earl is going to brush over the area, it’s possible we will received close to an inch of rain with winds gusting between 30 and 40 mph. If the storm were to hit directly, there could be powerful winds up to 50 mph which could cause trees to uproot and wide range power outages.

«Hopefully its going to be less weather than more,» he said.

In Massachusetts, Gov. Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency Thursday, a move he said would allow emergency personnel to response quick to any disaster.

In Maine state emergency responders and equipment were positioned on Thursday, while the state’s police, marine patrol, wardens and department of transportation were to be out in force to respond to any emergency situations.

Coming up through the Caribbean now is Tropical Storm Fiona with winds of 50 mph, which is expected to drift east of Bermuda and dissipate by sometime Sunday. Tropical Depression Gaston has recently formed off the coast of Africa, sustaining winds at 35 mph with a projected path directed toward the islands in the Eastern Caribbean.

Insurnace agencies across the state are urging residents check their emergency supply kits in their homes and make sure there is at least enough food and water to last a week.

Warmer than normal temperatures are expected to arrive with the coming of Earl, but not nearly as high as the past few days. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory on Thursday with temperatures reaching a monthly high record. The recent heat wave set a record for the month of September with Wednesday’s high being 95 degrees, beating the previous record of 94 degrees set in 1980.

The heat advisory was in effect until 6 p.m. because of the mix of high temperatures and humidity which raised the heat index values close to 100 degrees. The heat index is defined as the calculation of relative humidity and air temperature in an attempt to explain how hot humans perceive it to be.

Temperatures are expected to mellow out next week with the highs staying around 70 degrees and the lows dropping into the mid 50s.
